The first Hyatt-branded hotel in Malta is scheduled to open in 2021, the company announced today.

The 153-room Hyatt Regency Malta in the coastal town of St Julian’s will offer restaurants, flexible working spaces, meeting and event rooms and an underground carpark.

The property will be 20 minutes from Malta’s international airport.

“We are thrilled to announce plans for the first Hyatt-branded property in Malta, a country rich in historic architecture and now quickly becoming one of the most sought after destinations for business and leisure travel,” said Guido Frederich, Hyatt’s regional vice president of development for Europe.

Hyatt said Malta’s tourist numbers had doubled since 2010, and called St Julian’s one of the country’s most in-demand destinations.

This week, low-cost carrier Ryanair announced it would launch a subsidiary called Malta Air to serve the island alongside flag-carrier Air Malta.

Hyatt Regency’s European portfolio also includes Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée, the upcoming Hyatt Regency Barcelona Fira and Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid, and the recently-announced Hyatt Regency Lisbon.
