Boston transportation officials are sketching out a billion-dollar plan to improve vehicle and pedestrian access at Logan International Airport, the Boston Globe reports.
Massport, the agency that operates the airport, has an extensive grounds improvement wish list that includes moving ride-sharing pickups and drop-offs away from terminals to the airport’s central garage — likely to happen later in 2019 — adding a new parking garage near Terminal E, and reconstruction of Logan’s confusing system of roadways.
Plans also call for doubling the size of the airport’s Silver Line bus fleet and changing the departure location for Logan Express shuttles.
Other mass-transit improvements could include a monorail connecting the MBTA’s Blue Line and ferry docks to airport terminals.
Within the next few years, passenger pickups and drop-offs by private vehicles may be banned entirely at Logan’s terminals.
The airport’s terminals B and C also are undergoing substantial renovations, and a 400,000-square-foot addition is being planned for Terminal E — the airport’s international terminal.
Massport officials say the improvements are needed to keep up with growth at Logan, which has seen passenger traffic rise 30 per cent in the last decade and is projected to increase another 17 per cent by 2024.
