Premier Inn has announced plans for a 400-room property close to Canary Wharf in east London.

The hotel will be housed within a 30-storey building next to Westferry DLR station, and will be the tallest Premier Inn property in the UK.

The development at 82 West India Dock Road was reported by Business Traveller last year, but Premier Inn has only recently been confirmed as the occupier, with construction due to commence in summer 2019.

The development will also feature 66 residential apartments, retail and community space, as well as a ground floor “Whitbread-branded restaurant”.

There will also be “substantial public realm improvements”, including the planting of over 50 new and mature trees, ornamental planting, rain gardens and seating areas which will “greatly enhance the experience, appearance and biodiversity next to Westferry DLR station”.

Westferry station is located on the Docklands Light Railway, two stops from Canary Wharf, and three stops from Bank station in the City of London.

Commenting on the news Louise Woodruff, acquisitions manager for Premier Inn, said:

“We’re very excited to bring Premier Inn to Canary Wharf Westferry in what will be our tallest hotel in the UK.

“Aside from our hotels at Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, this 400-bedroom hotel will be the largest Premier Inn in London, which reflects the strong demand we’re experiencing in east London and especially around Canary Wharf.

“We’re delighted to secure the deal with Rockwell for a fantastic development that will make a positive contribution to Tower Hamlets by creating local jobs alongside new public areas and affordable homes.”
