The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), an intergovernmental organisation in charge of World Expos elects the Japanese city of Osaka as the host country for World Expo 2025.
With 92 votes, compared to 61 votes for Russia, Osaka is ready to attract international visitors once again, after its upcoming event of 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Organised every five years, this 185-day event is expected to witness 150 countries’ participation and will draw approximately 28 million visitors from Japan and abroad. The expo is slated to happen between May 3 and November 3, 2025, with the theme ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives.’
The Secretary General of the BIE, Vicente G. Loscertales declared, “The election of Japan as the host country of World Expo 2025 marks the start of an exciting journey for Osaka.” He further added, “The Expo project, based around the co-creation of a future society to address global challenges, has a strong resonance with the international community. After the memorable success of World Expo 1970, we look forward to seeing a World Expo once again come to life in Osaka, Kansai.”
Additionally, in a video message to BIE, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, “The Expo 2025 bid, all people in Japan are ready and excited to be hosting you and working with you all to make our world a wonderful place.” bie-paris.org
