Taiwanese carrier Eva Air is rolling out a new range of environmentally friendly blankets created from reused plastic drinks bottles to its economy class cabins this month.

The new EcoThread blankets are made using 100 per cent recycled plastic bottles, with each individual blanket comprising the equivalent of up to 26 reused bottles.

According to the carrier, the process reduces emissions by more than 70 per cent when compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

The blankets will be offered to economy class passengers across Eva Air’s entire fleet.

Eva Air isn’t the first airline to use recycled plastic to make in-flight blankets, however. Last year, Emirates rolled out its own blankets made from recycled plastic, also for passengers flying in economy class.

At the time, Emirates estimated that this recycling process would rescue some 88 million plastic bottles from landfills by the end of 2019.
