Etihad Airways has launched a new hand baggage only fare, aimed at “Guests travelling for business, weekend getaways or day trips who like to travel light”.

The new Deal Fare was trialed late last year, and has now been introduced on routes from Abu Dhabi to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Azerbaijan.

Customers get a carry-on luggage limit of 7kg, and the carrier said that passengers looking to add checked luggage after purchasing a Deal Fare ticket “can simply buy extra allowance at check-in or enjoy a 20 per cent discount when buying in advance online”.

Passengers with status in the Etihad Guest scheme will still enjoy a free checked luggage allowance when travelling on a Deal Fare, as follows:

  • Etihad Guest Silver: 10kg
  • Etihad Guest Gold: 15kg
  • Etihad Guest Platinum: 20kg

The new fare maybe limited to short-haul routes initially, but as with the US carriers and later the European legacy airlines, it will likely be extended to long-haul services in due course.

Readers can also expect Etihad’s Gulf rivals to follow suit – indeed earlier this year Emirates’ president Sir Tim Clark said that the airline was reviewing its economy class with reference to product and pricing.

Etihad has launched a number of ancillary revenue initiatives in recent times, including premium buy-on-board choices, economy seat selection fees, and a neighbour-free seat option.
