Architecture firm Woods Bagot has revealed new design images of the forthcoming redevelopment project at San Francisco International airport.
The development of a new 4,750sqm Boarding Area B within the airport’s Terminal 1 will take place in four phases between 2019 and 2022.
The concept for the design is one of ‘Bay Area Naturalism’, celebrating “the environment of Northern California”, with highlights including:
- a spacious concourse which “integrates art, restaurants, and retail showcasing the best in Bay Area fare and integrated technology to facilitate the passenger journey”
- curated spaces which “encourage either speed and efficiency or quietude and relaxation, depending on their function”
- the use of natural materials including wood and stone, “with contrasting hard and soft edges juxtaposed to reflect the diverse social ethos of the Bay Area community”
- a series of character areas, including “a sophisticated, cosmopolitan ‘marketplace’ and a ‘park’ area designed to have an outdoor feel and encourage play”
According to the airport’s website Terminal 1 “was built in the early 1960s and over time has become less able to accommodate the millions of passengers that it handles each year”.
Plans call for a total of $2.4 billion to be invested, including a revamped pre-security concourse, a new mezzanine level, and “new post-security corridors connecting to the International Terminal A gates and Boarding Area C”.
