As Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines continues to rapidly expand its international services, it’s little surprise to see that it’s also targeting overseas travellers to join its frequent-flyer programme, Fortune Wings Club, and new members in the UK and Canada in particular can now benefit with a new joining offer.

Travellers who join the airline’s programme, which is also shared by other carriers in the HNA Group, notably Hong Kong Airlines, through its offices in Manchester, Toronto or Calgary will get a one-time bonus of 800 points if they take their first flight before the end of the year.

There are a few exemptions prospective members ought to be aware of, however. New joiners must become part of the programme and then book their flight, which has to depart on an international route with either a HU (Hainan Airlines) or CN (Grand China Air) code before December 31, 2017, in order to get the bonus points.

Bookings made before registration to the programme are also not eligible, and travellers have to book a seat in a miles-accruing fare class. This means fare classes G, J, S, O and F are out of the picture.

The bonus miles accrued are also restricted to just reward redemptions and not for use towards membership upgrades.

While much of Hainan Airlines’ international expansion over the past year has been focused on North America and Australasia, it has made certain upgrades to its UK offerings, most notably deploying its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on its Beijing-Manchester route earlier this year.

Fellow Fortune Wings Club member carrier Hong Kong Airlines has also been expanding in Canada, notably with the launch of its Hong Kong-Vancouver route earlier this year in June – the airline’s first service to North America. Meanwhile, the airline has also expressed its goal of reviving its non-stop Hong Kong-London flights, though no details have yet been unveiled.

Prospective Fortune Wings Club members ought to note, however, that Hong Kong Airlines’ (HX) direct Vancouver service will not net them bonus points as part of the joining offer, as Hainan Airlines’ HU code currently doesn’t appear on the flight.
