Saudia Airlines has placed details of its dress code on its website, requiring travellers not to wear clothing that “would cause discomfort or offense to other passengers”.
Saudia is the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, which follows a conservative interpretation of Islam.
Under the dress code, women must wear clothing that covers their arms and legs, and cannot be “too thin” or “too tight”. Meanwhile for male travellers, the rules forbid the wearing of shorts.
The airline has stated that it may refuse to transport or remove passengers that do not adhere to the dress code.
As the BBC reports, views have been mixed on social media with some expressing support for the measures, and others finding it to be an inconvenience.
This isn’t the first time the topic of dress code aboard flights has come up this year. In March, United Airlines barred two teenage girls from boarding a flight from Denver to Minneapolis because they were wearing yoga pants.
