Travellers can now use the Amtrak mobile app to book trips with the Lyft ride-sharing service, and save a few dollars at the same time.

A new partnership between the US national passenger railroad and the nation’s second-largest ride-sharing company is being promoted with a $5 discount on the first four trips booked via the Amtrak app (use the code AMTRAKLYFT when scheduling a ride).

“We know most trips don’t start or end at an Amtrak station,” Amtrak noted in a press statement. “This exciting partnership with Lyft is one of the ways we are working to make it easier for travellers to get where they’re going in a safe, comfortable, and convenient way.”

Lyft operates in more than 360 US communities and is available to an estimated 97 per cent of Amtrak travellers. Amtrak serves passengers in 46 US states.

“Rides to transit stations are among Lyft’s most popular routes, making up 25 per cent of rides in Chicago alone,” a statement from Lyft said.

“We are focused on improving the customer experience, and this is one way we are working to make your entire journey as seamless and enjoyable as possible,” said Jason Molfetas, executive vice president for marketing and business development for Amtrak.
