Hotel update: Global round-up

Park Plaza London Waterloo

Park Plaza has opened a new hotel by London Waterloo station. Housed in the former premises of the UK’s Central Office of Information, the 494-room property has a mix of superior, studio and one-bedroom suites alongside a range of restaurants including an all-day dining option and bar, an executive lounge and an Illy café, plus an indoor pool, a gym and a spa.

Room Mate Gerard Barcelona

Room Mate Hotels has opened its fifth hotel in Barcelona. A short walk from Placa Catalunya and the city’s Gothic quarter, the hotel has 66 rooms, a rooftop pool, sun deck, a lobby bar and gym plus meeting rooms. Interiors were designed by Chilean designer Jaime Beriestain, who was recognised as Spain’s “best designer of the year” in 2016. The group plans to open eight more European hotels in the next two years.

A 40-minute drive from Glasgow, the four-star hotel has completed a £3.5 million renovation revealing a refreshed cocktail bar, piano lounge, reception, rooms and restaurant. All 50 rooms and five suites now feature custom built furniture and new soft furnishings with free wifi, flat screen TVs, while suites feature toiletries from local brand, Arran Aromatics. Public areas and rooms have been decorated with red, mahagony and a tartan palette on lounge furnishings with framed photography on the walls.

Hilton Xian High-tech Zone

Hilton has opened its second hotel in the historic Chinese city of Xi’an. Located in the “High-tech Industries” zone, the hotel has 318 rooms offering floor-to-ceiling windows, LCD TVs, an ergonomic desk and free wifi.  Facilities include three restaurants serving Cantonese, Sichuanese and western cuisines, an indoor swimming pool, a spa and 24-hour gym. Executive rooms and suites have access to the hotel’s Executive Lounge, which offers butler service, afternoon tea and happy hour cocktails.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Saratoga Springs

Hilton has opened an extended stay property in the city of Saratoga Springs, in upstate New York. With a total 113 units, the hotel offers a combination of studio, one- and two- bedroom apartments with kitchens and separate living and sleeping areas, plus complimentary hot breakfast and a grocery shopping service. It is within easy reach of local headquarters of Global Foundries and Lockheed Martin, and as part of its facilities includes an indoor pool, hot tub and an outdoor patio with a fire pit and sports court, plus 45 sqm of flexible meeting space.

Moxy Times Square, New York

Marriott is set to open a Moxy hotel in New York’s Times Square. Expected to open in September, the hotel will have 612 rooms, suites and public spaces that feature exposed brick walls, Pushelberg leather and canvas furnishings and five restaurants and bars designed by Rockwell Group architecture and design firm. It will also have a gym, 125 sqm of meeting space, and New York City’s largest “all-season hotel rooftop bar and lounge”, featuring an “urban amusement park” concept and skyline views.

Hotel Barrière Le Fouquet Paris

Following six months of renovations, the Leading Hotels of the World member is due to reopen in July with refreshed decor and updated facilities. Within reach of the Arc de Triomphe between Avenue George V and the Champs Elysées, the hotel has 81 rooms and suites designed by French architect and interiors designer Jacques Garcia, two restaurants and bars, plus a swimming pool and spa.  It will welcome an extra wing with 19 new rooms and suites in 2018, offering views of the Champs Elysées.

Movenpick El Ein Bay

Movenpick Hotel El Ein Bay, Egypt

Movenpick Hotels and Resorts has announced that it will be opening its second property in the coastal town of El Sokhna, Egypt. Due to open in 2020, the 214-room integrated beach and golf resort will have five dining options including a specialty restaurant, a rooftop lounge, a swimming pool, a spa, a gym plus 1,000 sqm of meeting space. The group plans to operate 125 worldwide properties by 2020.

Leonardo Mestre, Venice

Leonardo Hotels will be opening a new property in Venice. Set to open in 2019 in Mestre, mainland Venice, the hotel will have 243 rooms, a restaurant and a bar, alongside meeting rooms and an outdoor terrace. Leonardo Hotels currently has more than 120 hotels in 50 destinations across Israel and Europe.
