Economy class passengers flying out of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with Malaysia Airlines are now required to print and attach their own baggage tags before proceeding to the bag drop counter.
The process is now mandatory for economy passengers travelling on all domestic and international flights, with the exception of services to Dhaka and Kathmandu.
Passengers who have checked in online are still required to print baggage tags themselves at the airport.
However, first and business class customers will still be able to have their baggage tags printed by airline personnel at the check-in counter.
Fifty self-service kiosks have been set up at the carrier’s check-in area at KLIA. Airline representatives will be onsite to provide assistance, while instructions can also be found printed on the baggage tags.
In a statement, Malaysia Airlines said that the move was part of its “strategy to leverage on technology in order to simplify and reduce the time for check in, giving customers more control over their travel experience.”
It is also the first phase of a long-term cost-saving plan by the airline, which will see it introduce a self-service bag drop service in the Q4, 2016.
