Turkish Airlines has confirmed it will offer travellers the option to rebook or cancel flights free of charge until July 20.

The announcement follows Friday’s failed coup attempt which has led to the arrest of around 6,000 people.

All flights in and out of Turkey were immediately cancelled and airports shut although this ban has now been lifted. Certain restrictions remain in place for flights from Turkey to the US.

Turkish Airlines has said travellers on any flights until July 20 booked before July 15 will be offered refunds or options to rebook or reroute free of charge.

The validity of a ticket can also be extended until August 15 without any fare difference or penalty. This also applies to group bookings.

British Airways has confirmed its flights to Turkey have resumed but it will continue to monitor the situation and keep all services under review.

The airline said travellers can rebook travel to a later date or use the value of the ticket towards a flight to an alternative destination.

‘Calming down’

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has said the situation in Turkey appears to be “calming”, but the security environment remains “potentially volatile”.

On flights the FCO said: “Following earlier disruption, flights to and from airports in Turkey are returning to normal, although some disruption remains and you should check with your airline or tour operator before travelling.

“You may need to turn up at the airport earlier than normal to get through the additional security checks in place.”

It added: “If you are in Turkey, please follow the advice of the authorities, closely monitor travel advice and contact your airline or tour operator.

“In Ankara and Istanbul we advise you to avoid public places, in particular demonstrations, and remain vigilant.

“Take sensible precautions if you are in the vicinity of any military or security forces. Roadblocks are in place in some areas.”
