Onyx unveils wide-ranging developments in Pattaya

Onyx Hospitality Group’s Pattaya presence is getting a substantial boost, with the company announcing it will spend US$100 million to build a new Ozo property as well as enhance its existing Amari Pattaya next door.

The new Ozo Pattaya will feature 406 rooms, bringing the total number of rooms of the group’s North Pattaya site to 752 keys across three hotels. The Ozo will function as a mid-scale property with a tech-focused offering including high-speed wifi, “plug-and-play” integration for personal devices, and a paperless front desk and interactive kiosks with information about the destination. Meanwhile the brand’s Eat and Eat2go dining outlets will also feature at the hotel.

Alongside the development of the Ozo Pattaya, Onyx’s existing Amari Pattaya will be getting a new all-suite Amari wing located where its Garden Wing was previously situated. Finally, the investment will also see the refurbishment of the 20-storey Amari Pattaya Ocean Tower along with its surrounding facilities.

“Through the decades of the company’s ongoing growth and transformation, this iconic Amari location has stood the test of time and witnessed many milestones, achievements and events,” said Onyx CEO, Douglas Martell. “As we approach the 45th anniversary of Amari Pattaya, it is with great excitement that we embark on plans to enhance the guest experience at this flagship property, whilst introducing a brand-new Ozo and an all-suites Amari property to accommodate the evolving needs of international travellers, regional visitors and local patrons.”

The new all-suite wing of the Amari Pattaya will feature 49 accommodations all angled towards the sea with direct ocean views. Fully equipped kitchens and balconies will also be available in every suite.

As for the Ocean Tower, it will be receiving new guestrooms and suites, an overhaul to its lobby and arrival area, and enhancements to its Horizon Club executive lounge and its market-style Amaya Food Gallery.

The new developments at Pattaya form part of Onyx’s wider expansion plans to have 99 properties by 2024. The company’s development pipeline currently includes more than 20 new properties across Asia-Pacific, notably in Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia.

Onyx opens first property in Malaysia

Amari Johor Bahru - Superior King Reading Area

The Amari Johor Bahru has opened in Malaysia’s southern gateway capital of Johor state, marking the debut of Onyx Hospitality Group to the Southeast Asian country.

Much like the city it resides in, the new property is geared towards connectivity across the country’s nearby border with Singapore. Along with being located near to the city’s Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex, the new Amari will also be within reach of the upcoming MRT rail system linking Singapore with Johor Bahru. Senai International Airport is about 30 minutes away by car, while Singapore’s Changi Airport is about 80 minutes from the hotel.

“Amari Johor Bahru has been designed in response to market demands and trends, as tourism in Johor Bahru is currently undergoing a major transformation,” said Onyx’s CEO, Douglas Martell. “This opening will pave the way for the upcoming OZO Medini and Shama Medini at the UM Medini City Lakeside Complex in the nearby Iskandar area, also developed in partnership with UMLand.”

Key features of the new property include spa-inspired bathrooms within the guestrooms along with six deluxe pool access rooms with private terraces – a feature the hotel claims to be the first of its kind for a downtown hotel in the city. Beyond the rooms, a dedicated spa, a market-style all-day restaurant, a café and an outdoor poolside bar make up the leisure facilities. Events facilities, meanwhile, comprise a ballroom, an outdoor terrace as well as multi-functional rooms with names ranging from “The Library” to the “Idea Room”.

Overall, the Amari Johor Bahru will feature 242 guest rooms.

Onyx announces Asia-Pacific expansion

Onyx Hospitality Group

Thailand-based Onyx Hospitality Group is set to open a slew of new properties across Asia-Pacific over the next four years, as part of an expansion plan that will see it make brand debuts in China, Laos, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The new hotels will be opened under the group’s Amari, Ozo and Shama brands, with its earliest properties coming online throughout 2017.

The Amari Galle – the brand’s first hotel in Sri Lanka and third Onyx property overall – is scheduled to open next year in the country’s historical south-western coastal region, which is home to sites including the Unesco World Heritage Galle Fort. Located approximately 90 minutes from the capital Colombo, the hotel will feature 172 rooms and suites all offering sea views, while a multi-tiered pool deck with direct beach access, a spa, two restaurants, banquet facilities and a fitness centre will also be available.

Meanwhile, also opening in 2017, the Amari Yangshuo Guilin will offer 72 rooms and will be located in downtown Yangshuo in the south of China. The property will similarly be the group’s first Amari property in the country.

Onyx is also set to begin management its first Amari property in Laos next year, located in Vang Vieng, followed by two more Amari hotels in Vientiane and Pakse both opening in 2020. The company’s debut Vietnam property, Ozo Hoi An, is also set to open its doors in 2017 and, at 364 rooms, is set to become the group’s largest Ozo hotel to date.

In addition, the group currently has four Malaysia properties currently under development, with the 242-room Amari Johor Bahru – located just across the Malaysian border with Singapore – also scheduled for a 2017 opening. Meanwhile its Shama Medini and Ozo Medini properties are set to open the following year, offering 232 serviced apartments and 198 rooms respectively.

Speaking about the Asia-Pacific expansion, the group’s CEO Peter Henley said: “We are very pleased with our achievements in 2016 which has been a highly significant year for Onyx Hospitality Group. We are delighted to be strategically expanding the presence of our hotel brands beyond Thailand across the Asia-Pacific region, and excited to introduce our flagship Amari brand to Sri Lanka, China and Laos.

“We are thrilled by the progression of Ozo and the response to the brand among hotel guests and investors. One of our key news items for 2017, introducing our unique Ozo brand concept to Vietnam, is set to take Onyx into new markets in the coming years.”

Earlier last month, Onyx announced that it would be making its Australia debut in 2019 with the opening of its Shama Luxe Aurora Melbourne Central serviced apartment complex.
