Langham to introduce three new Cordis hotels in Asia-Pacific

Langham Hospitality Group’s nascent upscale Cordis brand is spreading its reach with three new properties in Asia-Pacific now in the pipeline.

Among these is its first property in mainland China, the Cordis, Shanghai, Hongqiao that is scheduled to open its doors next week (May 26). Located in the city’s Hongqiao district, the 396-room hotel is being positioned as a MICE-centric property with 1,600 sqm of its own events space – including two pillarless ballrooms – along with being located nearby the city’s National Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Meanwhile, a second hotel in China is scheduled to open its doors in 2019 just a short distance outside of Shanghai in neighbouring Hangzhou. The 200-room new-build Cordis, Hangzhou is set to be located in the Future Technology City hub focused on high-tech businesses, among them the headquarters of Chinese online marketplace Alibaba. The hotel will notably feature Langham’s Chuan Body and Soul spa along with a fitness centre and indoor pool. Some 1,500 sqm of events space – nearly as much as the Hongqiao property – will also be available.

Finally earlier this week, the company announced that The Langham Auckland will undergo a rebrand into the Cordis, Auckland with an opening scheduled for November 1 this year. A renovation of the property’s 411 rooms and suites, lobby lounge and Club Lounge will begin on July 11 and is expected to continue through the November opening until February next year.

“These three new additions to the Cordis Hotels and Resorts portfolio are exciting developments for the brand,” said Robert Warman, CEO of Langham Hospitality Group. “Asia Pacific is a great foundation for the group’s pipeline, and we are confident that the Cordis brand will increase its presence in the major cities around the world within the next five years.”

Along with the China and New Zealand properties, a property in Bali is also in the pipeline. Cordis is also exploring additional cities for future expansion including London, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok.

A young hotel brand, Cordis was launched only in 2015 when Langham converted its Langham Place Mongkok property to the brand’s flagship Cordis, Hong Kong. At the time, Langham cited the need to differentiate between its two hotels in the city (the other being The Langham, Hong Kong in nearby Tsim Sha Tsui district) by positioning its Mongkok district property as a more casual, lifestyle-focused alternative to its Langham-brand hotels.

Singapore Airlines partners with Cordis Hong Kong for new in-flight menu

Singapore Airlines has announced a new partnership with Cordis Hong Kong’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Ming Court. The collaboration will see a new “Wellness Selection” menu introduced for all passengers in Suites, first, business, premium economy and economy class on flights from Hong Kong to Singapore and San Francisco, starting from October 30 until April 30 next year.

The new menu will use nutritious Chinese ingredients that focus on wellness. These include: cordycep flower, which is purported to help supplement the spleen and soothe digestion; ginseng, which helps energise the body; and wolfberry, claimed to help improve clarity of vision.

Shane Pateman, managing director of Cordis Hong Kong, said: “Cordis was born a year ago. As a new brand, it was built around two principles – heartfelt service and wellbeing. We are looking after travellers in our hotel business, and thinking about every aspect of every different type of traveller’s wellbeing. This is a fundamental part of how we build this brand. That’s something we find the easiest and most obvious when we talk about Chinese cuisine. It is a historic cuisine having wellness and health nutrition, which Ming Court can offer.

“When Singapore Airlines was working on the menu, which takes care of customer wellness, it made perfect sense and we were absolutely happy to enter into a joint venture with them.”

Wellness ingredients can often be subtle and the flavour of dishes containing them may not always be particularly strong. When asked about how to trigger people’s taste buds at a high attitude, Mango Tsang Chiu Lit, executive chef of Ming Court, explained: “Most dishes do not give a strong flavor. To trigger the taste buds, we will increase the savoury and sweet taste, that’s why we added natural sweet ingredient such as wolfberry in some of our dishes. In addition, as the humidity in the cabin is low, we added a nourishing and nutritious dessert, chilled papaya soup with snow fungus and wolfberry, to alleviate dryness.”

The collaboration with Ming Court marks the first partnership of the carrier with a Hong Kong restaurant. Betty Wong B Y, divisional vice president of customer experience of the airline, said the carrier would listen to comments from customers. If they receive good responses, they may think of applying the “Wellness Selection” on additional routes, partnering with other local restaurants in the future.”

Langham offers hotel stays and a million miles for “most romantic proposal”

Langham Hotels will send one lucky couple judged to submit the “most romantic proposal” on trip worth US$40,000 to its eight Langham properties worldwide

The group has launched the competition in the run up to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April, and has set up a website at romantic.langhamhotels.com.

Entrants should upload a videoblog detailing their marriage proposal, or a video of the actual event, and link it to Facebook or Chinese social media site Kaixin.

Ten finalists will then be picked in May, and asked to share how they would spend their time at the eight Langham locations worldwide, before an eventual winner is chosen.

The prize consists of one million frequent flyer miles, two-night stays in each of the eight Langham properties (located in London, Hong Kong, Boston, Pasadena, Auckland, Melbourne and two hotels in Shanghai). The winner will also receive airport transfers and an afternoon tea experience.
