Viceroy Hotel Group is to open a Chicago property in September.
Located on the site of the 1920s-era Cedar hotel on North State Street in the Gold Coast neighbourhood, north of Downtown, the Viceroy Chicago will be part of the luxury group’s Icon Collection.
The 180-room property is keeping the brick and terracotta façade of the original hotel while adding an 18-floor new-build section, which will house a rooftop bar and pool with views of the skyline and Lake Michigan.
Somerset restaurant on the ground floor will serve “approachable American cuisine”. It will be led by chef Lee Wolen, who oversees the city’s Michelin-starred Boka and has previously worked at New York’s Eleven Madison Park, Oxford’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Spain’s El Bulli.
Rooms will start from 31 sqm and offer free wifi, Nespresso machines and 55-inch Samsung smart TVs. The property will also have a gym and ballroom.
The opening follows the recent launch of the LA-based group’s first Dubai property on March 31. Viceroy Palm Jumeirah Dubai is located on the trunk of the Palm and has 447 rooms and suites across 16 floors. Viceroy chief executive Bill Walshe said the Dubai hotel’s look was “modern and contemporary” with a “strong infusion of America”.
Other facilities include a 55-metre pool, a 200-metre private beach, a 1,675 sqm spa, a 14th-floor ballroom with Arabian Sea views, and eight food and drink venues, including a 13th-floor wine bar.
Viceroy has several other properties in the pipeline, including in Istanbul (to open in 2018), Serbia (2018), Buenos Aires (2019), the Algarve (2019), Panama (2020), Da Nang in Vietnam (2020) and Cartegena (2020). Walshe said the last of these would be “the best hotel in Colombia without a shadow of a doubt”.
