Tried and Tested: Equinux Tizi

28 Apr 2011 by AndrewGough

The Equinux Tizi is a smart little device that turns iPhones and iPads into digital TV receivers. The device itself acts as the receiver, which then feeds the TV signal to the iPhone or iPad via wifi. A clever app (downloadable for free from the App Store) takes the wifi/TV signal and displays it.

The device is tiny, and so very portable, with an excellent battery life of around 3.5 hours at constant use, easily enough for a train journey making it great for commuters. The only downside is the availability of a viable digital signal, however TV signals are always more consistent than 3G, which means that the Tizi beats 3G streaming with regards to video.

The Tizi gives access to the wide range of digital terrestrial channels available. In the UK, this includes all the BBC channels, all the traditional analogue channels (ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5) but also Dave ja vu, Film 4 and E4.

Set-up couldn't be easier. Make sure the device is charged, download the app, find the device in your wifi list, extend the aerial and wait for the app to tune into the various channels. The interface is simple and straightforward, though could be slicker.

The most impressive feature by far is the app's ability to record TV as it is streamed, for viewing at a later date.

This is the first such device that we've come across at Business Traveller, and the price reflects this being a touch on the pricey side at 5p shy of £150. However, compare this to the nearest non-iPhone/iPad equivalent and it represents good value for money. Plus it's another way in which to show off just how good your shiny Apple device is.

Tizi needs iOS4 found on the iPhone 3GS and 4, the iPod Touch (4th gen and 3rd gen 32GB) and iOS 3.2 and 4 on the iPad.
