Serviced apartment: 8 On Claymore, Singapore

30 Dec 2011

BACKGROUND Managed by the independently run Royal Plaza on Scotts, this latest addition to Singapore’s burgeoning serviced apartment sector is seen as a new platform for the hotel to showcase its style of personalised service. According to Patrick Fiat, general manager and chief experience officer of 8 on Claymore (he runs Royal Plaza on Scotts as well), its mission is to make guests’ stay in Singapore a productive one while creating  “unforgettable and sometimes, amusing experiences for them”.

For example, one of the earliest residents of 8 on Claymore, the Lopez Calva family, arrived to find a photo of themselves in the living room, plus bathrobes embroidered with their names as well as chocolate lollipops by the executive pastry chef, while the seven-year-old son received pyjamas with his name and a chocolate bear. I was gifted with a mug, which upon close inspection, bore our portrait made to look like artwork hanging on the living room wall. Clever!

WHAT’S IT LIKE? The ground floor lobby is a tiny affair, really a passageway to the lift to reach either the reception/residents’ lounge or an apartment. But three ceramic Chinese-looking gentlemen that make up a whimsical art piece are stationed there, as if perhaps to make up for the absence of human staff (who are found upstairs). Their eternally infectious grins never failed to make me smile broadly when arriving or leaving for the day’s appointments.

Our three-bedroom unit, measuring 125 sqm, featured a truly spacious common area, consisting of the living room, dining area and kitchen. I was impressed by the amount of natural light that poured into the place, creating a cheerful atmosphere. I couldn’t help wishing though that the series of windows, which ran all throughout the unit, were larger to allow a more panoramic view, but I guess the management had to adapt to existing infrastructure or rack up extra costs.

WHERE IS IT? The frenzy of Orchard Road is just steps away. Residents can easily access the malls and myriad attractions through the next-door Royal Plaza on Scotts.

Residence Facilities The master bedroom, comes with its own bathroom as does the bedroom at the end of the hall, while the bedroom in between can make use of the bathroom that’s opposite it (which comes in handy when entertaining guests). The expected hardware can be found in place: LED TV (with frightening clarity) in all rooms and in the living room, which also has a DVD player and iPod docking station; sleek cooking range and refrigerator; Nespresso coffee machine and washer-cum-dryer.

F&B The pool facing the residents’ lounge serves buffet breakfast Monday to Friday, and continental breakfast on Sundays and public holidays.

BUSINESS & MEETING FACILITIES None on site but those of Royal Plaza on Scotts are available.

LEISURE FACILITIES Outdoor pool for adults plus children’s pool, and barbecue area set in a tropical ambience. The fitness centre has Technogym equipment.

Verdict: I would highly recommend this property for anyone (and their families), who wants to be close to the heart of the action but not near enough to be stressed by it. Outstanding service.
