Hotel check: Hutton Hotel

27 Jun 2011 by BusinessTraveller

BACKGROUND Open since February 2009 and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Hutton is owned by US firm Amerimar Enterprises, which recently relaunched London’s St Ermin’s hotel.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? One of the only boutique-style properties in Nashville, the four-star deluxe Hutton is the bolthole of choice for many visiting musicians. Housed in a converted office building, it has 248 rooms across 15 floors. Welcoming staff greet you as you enter a spacious, bright lobby with a living-room feel. Armchairs are pulled up in front of reception, a flatscreen TV shows a roaring fire, sofas and chairs are plentiful, and striking artworks are on show.

Particular credit goes to the concierge – on arrival, I realised I had left a personal item on the plane and within an hour they had tracked it down and drove me to the airport to pick it up.

WHERE IS IT? On West End Avenue, about five to ten minutes’ drive from downtown. A courtesy car is provided within a 5km radius.

ROOM FACILITIES Rooms start from 28 sqm and are bright with floor-to-ceiling windows (looking towards downtown or nearby Vanderbilt University), bamboo furniture, abstract prints and a colour palette of cream, beige, brown and red. All have air conditioning, wired and wifi internet (US$10 per 24 hours), a flatscreen TV, a media hub built into the workdesk, a safe, minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, robe and slippers, iron and ironing board, and 24-hour room service.

The modern granite bathrooms have L’Occitane toiletries and a walk-in rainshower – in the suites, these feature digital water temperature controls, though these are located outside the shower so you have to jump out to adjust them. Suites also have a living room with a big soft-wool sofa, tan velvet armchair and another TV. There are Nespresso machines on every floor.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS On the ground floor is the bar-restaurant, 1808 Grille. Open 6.30am-12am (1am Fri-Sat), it serves regional American fine-dining cuisine. Dishes are inventive and the à la carte breakfast very satisfying. A kiosk in the lobby serves coffee, juice and breakfast snacks from 6am to 10am, and a complimentary wine hour takes place here on weekday evenings.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES There is 1,250 sqm of meeting space, including a 500-capacity ballroom. A business corner with two PCs is situated in the lobby.

LEISURE FACILITIES There is a 24-hour gym and two treatment rooms.

VERDICT The design-led nature of the property means it has carved out a real niche for itself in the Nashville hotel scene, but what really sets it apart is the superb service. Highly recommended.
