New Zealand agrees to visa-free deal with Taiwan

23 Nov 2009

New Zealand has abolished visa restrictions on Taiwanese visitors from November 30.

The new rules mean that business travellers, as well as leisure and educational visitors, can stay in New Zealand for up to three months. This will save Taiwanese passport holders as much as US$85, the current price of a single-entry visa. New Zealand visitors to Taiwan will also have their visa-free stays extended from 30 to 90 days.

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, trade between the two economies reached US$1.26 billion in 2008, making Taiwan New Zealand’s tenth largest trading partner.

New Zealand is the third country this year, following the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, to grant Taiwanese passport holders visa-free privileges. The UK agreement was signed in early March this year, resulting in a 40 percent year-on-year increase in visitors to Britain in March and April. Earlier this month, British and Taiwanese aviation authorities agreed to increase the number of flights from six to 10 per week between London and Taipei.
