Indonesia adopts biometrics for border control

25 Mar 2010

Indonesia has launched a new biometric system to improve security at its airports and seaports.

The system captures facial images and fingerprints of arriving passengers and are checked against the immigration database for clearance.

"The use of biometrics adds an extra element to the identification and verification of arrival. We can now be confident that people match passports," said Erwin Azis, director of immigration information systems at Imigrasi.

Imigrasi stands for the Directorate General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Indonesia.

The Adisucipto International Airport, serving Yogyakarta in central Java, is the first airport to go live with the SITA iBorders system. Twenty six airports and seaports in the country will be equipped with the system by June.

When the project is completed, 300 workstations will process the vast majority of Indonesia's approximately 20 million passengers who go through its international borders.
