10 Oct 2006 by intern11

What’s it like? Stepping into the lobby, set off by white-washed walls and decked with dark wood ending in a water lily-dotted reflection pool, any traveller arriving at The Chedi will feel fatigue instantly melting away.

Where is it? Sitting on the banks of Mae Ping River, this resort jewel is located in the heart of Chiangmai, near the night bazaar and a 20-minute ride from the airport.

How many rooms? 52 Deluxe Rooms and 32 Chedi Club Suites, all with big balconies.

Room facilities: My spacious one-bedroom suite came with an open bathroom, which can be given more privacy with retractable shutters, and impresses with huge vanity space for him and her, a separate shower and a sizeable bathtub. The dining space and lounging area can be enjoyed on an indulgent day bed. Out on the balcony, another divan and a smaller settee offer an ideal nook for alfresco meals. Guests of The Chedi Club Suite are also offered butler service, free items from use of a well-stocked minibar, free Wi-Fi and broadband internet access and Bose sound system.

Restaurants: The Restaurant is ensconced in a free-standing colonial wooden building dating back to 1913, which once housed the British Consulate. It serves a hearty American buffet breakfast and à la carte Thai, Indian and international flavoured dishes.

Bars: The Terrace Bar & Cigar Lounge offers casual day beds and inviting river views. The Bar sits 37 and The Lobby Lounge is best remembered for its open fireplace and tranquil atmosphere.

Business facilities: The resort has a boardroom that seats 12 persons and a meeting room for 49.

Leisure facilities: The Health Club blends natural lighting, river views and a remarkable choice of exercise equipment. An adjoining aerobic room is perfect for warm-ups and yoga.

Verdict: The Chedi is a perfect blend of traditional Thai values and modern-day indulgence, aimed to please the discerning business traveller. The serene environment, enhanced by stylish design, impresses together with the sincerity, professionalism and warmth of the hotel staff.

Price: A leisure package from The Chedi website starts from US$645.56 until Dec 20.
