These dual balanced armature earphones are very similar to the 1More Triple driver ones tested a a few weeks ago.

Headphones review: 1More Triple Driver

Like those earphones, these are dual armature (see the previous review for an explanation) and are a similar – though slightly higher – price. The main differences in terms of listening come from the “over ear” fitting, of which more later, and the much simpler packaging.

Brainwavz has a range of over 25 earphones and headphones and these ones are the third of the audiophile-grade B series, following on from the B100 and B150. The information that comes with them says the following:

“The dual balanced tweeter and woofer armature configuration produces a balanced and accurate sound signature, with little to no colouring in the mids and a slight focus on the upper mids sound. The bass is tight and the neutral bass has a clear, fast delivery with a natural punch to it, delivering an overall sound the artist would have intended when producing the song being listened to.”

Would I agree with that? Well, What I found was that they were excellent for all types of listening – from watching television programmes on the iPlayer while on an aircraft (from an iPad) to music ranging from quiet classical to more modern – and louder – music.

The over-ear design, I am convinced, helps give a real good fit to your ears – or it did with mine, and although I was a little nervous at first at having the wire looping over my ear, in fact it didn’t cause any problems. That said, I do use earphones on running machines in gyms, and since there’s always the chance that they might catch one of your arms while running and pull then earphones out suddenly, I wouldn’t use them for that, since the over-ear configuration might be extremely painful.

Although the packaging is relatively simple, the earphones come with six silicon ear tips of various sizes and one set of Comply foam tips. The cable, unfortunately, is extremely liable to tangle, and in fact I had to untangle it pretty much every time I got the earphones out of the case, no matter how carefully I had put them away.

VERDICT

A good choice – comfortable, good noise-cancelling properties and easy to wear for long periods. Perhaps the cable will grow easier over time, but these are high-quality ear phones that have quickly become my favourite for trips.
