Adria Airways CRJ-200 economy class

21 May 2009 by Mark Caswell

Background Slovenia’s national airline, Adria Airways, has been a regional member of Star Alliance since 2004, and serves the UK daily from the country’s capital of Ljubljana. The carrier participates in Lufthansa’s Miles and More frequent flyer scheme.

Check-in I arrived at London Gatwick’s North Terminal at 0830 for my Adria Airways flight JP451 to Ljubljana. I had checked in online and printed off my boarding pass, but needed to check in a bag, so I headed for the carrier’s two check-in desks – one for economy and one for business – in zone B, both of which were clear. Security checks were swift, and after a look around duty free, I headed to gate 50. Boarding commenced at 0915, and we took off on time at 0945.

The seat Adria Airways uses two types of Canadair Regional Jets (CRJs) on the route. On this outbound flight it was the smaller CRJ-200 model (click here for a review of the return journey in the longer CRJ-900 model). The CRJ-200 has 50 seats in a 2-2 layout, with two seats on the left-hand side in the front row. The first three rows (ten seats) were set aside for business, with the remaining 40 in economy. The seats were clean and fairly modern, although not as new as those on the return leg.

Where to sit? For extra legroom, choose row eight as this is where the emergency exits are located. Other than that, the jet engines on this aircraft are located at the back of the aircraft by the tailfin, which makes for a noisier ride towards the rear of the plane.

The flight Soon after take-off we were offered the choice of a cheese or “meat” sandwich (which I later found out meant smoked ham), followed by drinks. On this flight no seats were taken in business, and 24 of the 40 economy seats were occupied.

Arrival We landed on time just after 1245, and were inside the tiny terminal building within a couple of minutes. Luggage arrived on the carousel quickly – unfortunately rain in the UK meant my fabric-material bag was wet and some of my documents inside were damp. The airport is about 25km from the city centre.

Verdict Attentive staff and a comfortable enough seat for the two-hour journey. Arrivals at Ljubljana was a breeze.

Price When Business Traveller checked on Tuesday May 19, online midweek return fares in mid June started from €256 in economy.
