Wyndham Grand unveils revamp

28 Sep 2009 by Mark Caswell

The Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour has unveiled the first stage of its new look. After a nine-month refurbishment, four new penthouse suites have opened on the eighth floor, along with a new executive lounge and two meeting rooms.

The extensive renovation programme is expected to be completed early next year, and Jeremy Hopkins, operations director at the Wyndham Grand London Chelsea Harbour, said that the hotel “will be the flagship for the Wyndham collection”.

The new penthouse suites are named after areas in London and feature the creative influences of well-known British designers. They have separate living and sleeping areas, rain showers, original design prints on the walls and open fires, as well as terraces with views over the London skyline.

The two-bedroom King’s suite, inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s flambuoyant style, features a union jack headboard, an infinity bath (a spa bath with water that flows over the edge) with colour-changing light therapy and a lounge area. The Kensington Suite, which has a pin-stripe theme, uses Paul Smith designed fabrics and soft furnishings.

The Savile Suite, named after Savile Row and featuring the design influence of Alexander McQueen including a ceiling-height paisley headboard, has a private screening area, while the feminine Abingdon suite is influenced by the design house Biba and features 1960s inspired black and white polka dot carpets and original Chanel artwork.

The newly opened executive lounge, which is currently open to all guests until the work on the reception area is completed early next year, has a terrace with views over London, as well as a lounge space and bar. From January, it will be available to use only for guests staying in the suites, who will also have access to a private chef and in-room butler.

Also on the penthouse level are two new meeting rooms, both of which can seat up to 60 people and fearure natural light and views over the River Thames. The rooms are flexible, so they can be combined to create a larger event space.

Other work will see the first-floor restaurant extended to add a new terrace space overlooking the marina. There will also be a new business centre, reception and lounge area, while the spa will reopen next year with a pool, gym, six meeting rooms, plus a sauna and steam room.

On the ground floor, what used to be nine meeting rooms and a sales office will become one of London’s newest banqueting, conference and events venues, seating up to 600 people for a dinner.

It will have floor to ceiling windows overlooking the marina and a colour-changing ceiling – with hidden lights that can be lit in any hue to coordinate with an event’s colour scheme. The ballroom will lead onto three meeting rooms and a reception area running the length of the room.

The Wyndham Grand was first opened in the mid-1980s as a Conrad hotel, but the management was taken over by Wyndham in 2006. The hotel is located near Fulham Broadway underground station and the soon to open Imperial Wharf railway station, which will be on the London Overground network.

The US-based hotel group Wyndham Hotels and Resorts also recently opened its first hotel in China with a 588-room hotel in Xiamen (see online news June 29).
