Will Ryanair soon be serving Luxembourg?

12 Apr 2016 by Alex McWhirter

Speculation that Ryanair could soon be flying out of Luxembourg has excited local media.

Reports in regional German newspaper Trierische Volksfreunde and in the English language Luxemburger Wort indicate that the Irish low-cost airline may arrive later this year and possibly towards the end of October which is when the winter schedules commence.

What is likely to happen is that Ryanair will be transferring some or all of its flights which currently use Frankfurt Hahn to Luxembourg.

Marcus Bunk, manager of Frankfurt Hahn, is quoted as saying, “Ryanair will relocate from Hahn to Luxembourg. It will mean a significant decline in passenger traffic for us.”

However a new arrival at Hahn in the shape of Wizzair may take up some of the vacant space.

As yet Ryanair has not issued any statement.  So its plans for Luxembourg remain unclear.

Easyjet is the first UK low-cost airline to serve Luxembourg, so Ryanair's move would not be unprecendented.

Frankfurt Hahn lies many, many kilometres outside Frankfurt compare to the city’s main international airport which lies close to downtown.

In addition, Hahn is not in a good financial state.

According to board chairman Salvatore Barbaro, eight million Euros have been saved over the past three years by a rehabilitation programme. “Without these savings we would have had no future,” he told Trierische Volksfreunde.

If Ryanair does arrive in Luxembourg it will be another step in its new business plan which is to also offer flights to main airports.

Luxembourg’s central location is key to attracting the passenger volumes that a low-cost carrier needs to operate profitability.

Already a number of travellers using the Duchy’s airport arrive from nearby Germany, France and Belgium.  And this number can only increase should Ryanair launch services later this year.
