Westin launches sleep hotline

Westin Hotels and Resorts has teamed up with the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) to create a hotline for travellers in the US who find it difficult getting a proper night’s sleep, in celebration of ten years of Westin’s Heavenly Bed.

The free phone line, 888-TIME-4-SLEEP (888 is a toll-free number in the US, similar to British 0800 free phone numbers), will be staffed by medically trained NSF sleep specialists, who will offer solutions to callers with common sleep problems, such as insomnia, snoring and even sleepwalking.

The hotline will be open Monday to Friday, from 6pm to 1am Eastern Standard Time – considered to be the peak time that people are preparing for bed or experiencing sleep problems – and will run until September 15.

NSF staff are experts in lifestyle and environmental factors which can hamper a good night’s sleep. Their healthy sleep tips include: sleeping in complete darkness in a cool environment; not eating two hours before bed; and asking for hotel rooms with a southern or eastern exposure to maximise morning sunlight and help adjust your body clock to new time zones.

Westin also conducted a global sleep study of more than 12,500 people. According to the results, more than half those surveyed would prefer a great night’s sleep to great sex, 42 per cent would rather find a sleeping pill on their pillow than a chocolate, and 60 per cent said their Blackberry, PDA or other device had stopped them from getting much-needed sleep.

The all-white Heavenly Bed, launched in 1999, is made up of a custom designed pillow-top mattress set, a down blanket, three sheets with a thread count of at least 200, a duvet and five pillows.
