Virgin stewardesses don red shoes

Eagle-eyed travellers on Virgin's new Manchester-Las Vegas route may have noticed female staff have replaced their black shoes with patent leather red alternatives, prompted by the success of the carrier’s recent ad campaigns.

Virgin Atlantic’s “Your airline’s either got it or it hasn’t” campaign debuted in the UK in October last year (see online news October 1, 2010), and features stewardesses wearing the red shoes, and a soundtrack of Muses’s cover of the Nina Simone hit Feeling Good.

According to Virgin the new shoes come in two versions – the three-inch Dorothy, and the two-inch Dotty, and have been launched in the week that Virgin took delivery of its first A330 aircraft fitted with a brand new IFE system (see online news April 2).

The first staff to wear the new shoes were on board the carrier’s inaugural flight from Manchester to Las Vegas which launched on Sunday, a twice-weekly service complimenting its existing daily flights to Sin City from London Gatwick.

All female uniformed staff will be issued with the shoes over the next few months, and according to Director of product and service Dee Cooper the airline has also launched a three-year project to design a new uniform for staff.

Really? I'm sure their Jeffs and Daves and Mikes and Pauls will look just dandy in them.

It's something of a shame that this is the only thing that an airline has to talk about; and perhaps also that the industry is so short of innovation that such a story is considered newsworthy.

Thanks for your comments continentalclub - it should of course have read "all female uniformed staff" - this has now been amended.

We also take your point about the newsworthiness of the story, although it's a little unfair to say it's the only thing the airline has to talk about. In the last few days it has put the first of its new A330 aircraft into service, fitted with a new IFE system, and has launched a new route from Manchester to Las Vegas. All of this has also been reported on this site.

Wow, thats really interesting. I released my book "Business in Red Shoes" back in January. I always wear red shoes to work as they always give me a confidence boost and brighten my day.

They have become my trade mark and I often get asked if there is a link to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Now maybe they will wonder if I work for Virgin. Feeling good about yourself is very important and if red shoes work for me then maybe they will for the staff at Virgin.
