United Continental Holdings has announced plans to install wifi internet capabilities on over 200 domestic Continental aircraft, and is reported to be exploring possibilites for wifi on international services.

United Airlines already offers in-flight internet on 14 aircraft, including all flights linking New York JFK with LA and San Francisco.

And now merger carrier Continental Airlines plans to add wifi internet access to over 200 Boeing 737 and 757 aircraft beginning next year. The carrier has signed a letter of intent with in-flight entertainment provider LiveTV to offer wifi internet along with 95 channels of live TV.

Meanwhile the Chicago Tribune said yesterday (March 22) that “the Chicago-based parent company of United and Continental airlines is also exploring adding international wifi service and mulling deals with other broadband providers to help wire its fleet of more than 700 jets”, according to United Continental CEO Jeff Smisek.

United and Continental's rivals Delta and American Airlines both provide wifi access on domestic services through GoGo.
