European luxury hotel operator Kempinski has announced plans for two new hotels in Shanghai, China. The first will open mid-2011 in the Puxi District, located on the Huangpu River and just across from the new Expo Area.

The new 180,000sqm luxury complex with a 620-room hotel and 39 serviced apartments will be Kempinski's first hotel in Shanghai. The hotel (pictured below) will feature several restaurants, a German brewery, a 3,000sqm spa and extensive meeting and banquet facilities.

The second Kempinski property will be the Kempinski Residences Hongqiao in the Hongqiao business district, near Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai's domestic airport. Set in grounds covering 11,700 sqm there will be a total of 90 apartments ranging in size from 1 to 3 bedrooms, plus a few 4- and 6-bedroom residences will be available for long term rental.

The new residences will be designed by architect Shanghai East Architecture Designing Co. with interior design by DiLeonardo International Inc. According to Kempinski "the futuristic architecture is intended to integrate both the beauty of form and the practicality of function, so that residents can really enjoy the many facilities planned". There will be a conference centre, club house with swimming pool, fitness centre, as well as entertainment, shopping and restaurant areas, all within the complex.

In other news Kempinski has revealed that it is in advanced negotiations to sign a new London property. Kempinski previously had sales and marketing agreements with both The Bentley and the Courthouse Hotel which ended in 2008 (see online news March 12, 2008). The new property is in a central London location and is currently operating as a five-star hotel.
