Transaero to launch Moscow-Rio route

17 Nov 2010 by BusinessTraveller

The Russian carrier will commence weekly flights from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro in January, the only direct link between the two cities.

The route will launch on January 3, 2011, and will be operated by Boeing 747-400 aircraft departing Moscow Domodedovo airport at 1430, landing in Rio at 2330, with the return leg leaving Brazil at 0115 and landing back in Moscow at 1915.

The new route will be the first time the Russian carrier has served the Brazilian market, and the first direct flights between Russia and Brazil since rival carrier Aeroflot dropped routes to Rio de Janeiro, Salvador da Bahia, and Sao Paulo several years ago.

The Moscow-Rio route follows the launch of flights to Miami and New York (the latter also served by Aeroflot) at the end of last month. Both services are served by Boeing B747 jumbos, with twice-weekly flights to Miami, and three-times weekly services to New York.

Brazil is a rapidly emerging market for business travel and tourism, with the country hosting the 2014 World Cup, and Rio staging the 2016 Olympic Games. TAM Brazilian Airlines recently launched direct flights from London and Frankfurt to Rio (see online news June 9), and Alitalia is set to commence flights to the city from Rome in June next year (see online news September 29).
