The Park Kolkata unveils new designer look

The Park Kolkata, the first property of the Park Hotel chain in India, has unveiled its new reception and lobby areas. Terence Conran Design House, Conran & Partner’s, has “drawn inspiration from both the city and the landmark hotel in realising their design vision for the new guest spaces".

As previously reported on businesstraveller.com (New design hotel for Hyderabad, India 18/6/09) the brand is well-known for its innovative design spaces.

The Park Kolkata was opened in 1967, the year that the Beatles came to India to learn transcendental meditation, and has now used this date as a starting point for its redesign. The seven body chakras are associated with seven colours, which form the colour palate and inspiration for the new, vivid guest spaces.  The reception and lounge area, for instance, is a journey through orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo, culminating in violet at check-in. The muted monochrome palette of black and white granite chequered floor tiles, white walls and grey ceiling, contrasts the colour spectrum.

The reception has white marble walls, silver leaf finished ceiling and welcome desk, Swarovski ceiling lights and mirrored light fittings."The juxtaposition of the ‘negation of colour’ is again reflected in the dramatic play on black and white in the adjoining lounge, separated from the reception by dichroic glass akin to a long Donald Judd sculpture.”

The lounge is furnished with a selection of European modern design classics in black and white upholstery including a number of Fritz Hansen Swan chairs in geometric patterned fabrics. Experimentation with light is reflected in the flowing sculptural ceiling made from clear Perspex rods of varying lengths.

The hotel also has a new restaurant - The Street - with four stalls with interactive show kitchens and made-to-order food – Café, Deli, Desserts and Cellar – serving both local and international street food along with sought after, yet difficult to procure, gourmet products such as black truffles, artisan cheeses, truffle essence, Dorset cereals and world wines and beers.
