The big picture: Lufthansa unveils seat revamp

15 Dec 2010 by BusinessTraveller

Lufthansa is to fit 32,000 new Recaro seats to its fleet of short and medium-haul aircraft. The new slimmer product will allow Lufthansa to add around 2,000 seats across the 180 aircraft.

As previously reported on businesstraveller.com (see online news November 29), the new seats (also being installed on Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines fleet – see online news November 25) feature up to four inches extra legroom thanks to the “ergonomically shaped seat with its slim backrest”.

The slimmer seating will also allow Lufthansa to pack more seats into its short and medium-haul aircraft, with the equivalent capacity of 12 A320s being added across the fleet.

The carrier says that the new seat design features "a different angle of inclination, so that the permitted cabin luggage trolleys fit effortlessly under the seat in front".

In the case of the B737s overhead bins have also been redesigned and made deeper, so that hand luggage can be stowed sideways to the direction of travel, allowing more bags to be stored in each bin.

Enhancements are also being made to Lufthansa's F&B offering on short and medium-haul services, with economy passengers on domestic routes being served a snack along with drinks, and passengers on cross-border European services over two hours in length receiving a hot meal.
