TAM to double London-Rio flights

12 Apr 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Brazilian carrier TAM Airlines is to increase frequencies from Rio de Janeiro to London, Frankfurt and New York over the next few months, as it takes delivery of two new Airbus A330 aircraft.

The carrier will move to a daily Frankfurt-Rio service from May 2, and will also add a fifth weekly flight to New York next month, with a sixth service expected to follow in August.

Pending approval from the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency, TAM will also double its Rio-London frequencies from three-times weekly to six-times weekly from August 1, adding to the carrier’s daily service between Sao Paulo and London.

The increased frequencies are being made possible by the addition of two new Airbus A330 aircraft to TAM’s fleet, set to be delivered over the next two months.

Brazil will host the World Cup in 2014, while Rio will stage the 2016 Olympics after London in 2012.

TAM says there has already been “a considerable growth in the amount of leisure and business traffic” between London and Rio, “the business traffic being lead by the growth of the oil and gas industries, as well as finance and banking”.
