Brazilian Airline TAM has taken delivery of the first of eight Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft, due to be rostered on to long-haul flights including the Sao Paulo-London route.

The aircraft is configured for 365 seats in three classes, and will initially ply the carrier’s Sao Paulo-Santiago de Chile flights, before being used on routes to Frankfurt, Germany and London.

TAM will take delivery of three more 777-300 ER aircraft later this year, which will replace the MD-11 planes currently being used on some long-haul routes.

The carrier competes with British Airways on the London-Sao Paulo route, with fellow Brazilian airline Varig having recently dropped its European services (see online news April 16).  TAM currently offers a daily service from London Heathrow to Sao Paulo (departing at 2230, arriving at 0655 the next day).
