Taj replaces Mandarin for Marrakech hotel

Taj Hotels has announced it will manage the 161-room palace hotel in the Palmeraie district of Marrakech, following Mandarin Oriental’s decision to withdraw it management contract for the property.
Located around 30 minutes from the city’s international airport, the hotel is set to open this autumn, and will now be known as the Taj Palace Marrakech.
The property will feature 161 rooms including 25 Grand Suites and a Royal Suite, with views of the Atlas Mountains.
According to Taj, interior décor at the hotel draws inspiration from “the noble Berber Kasbahs of Morocco, the splendour of Ottoman architecture, exotic Oriental influences and the richness of Indian pageantry”.
There will be “several elegantly designed restaurants and bars serving a range of cuisine from Moroccan specialties to the finest flavours of Mediterranean and Asian cuisine”, and a 3,800sqm spa with 14 treatment rooms, two hammams and a fitness centre.
Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces will manage the property on behalf of owners JK Hotels, following Mandarin Oriental’s decision to withdraw from the project. In a statement the group said:
“Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has withdrawn its management contract for its Marrakech project, with effect from mid May 2011. Marrakech remains a suitable location for a Mandarin Oriental resort property, and the Group is exploring further opportunities in the destination.”
