Starwood announces further expansion in China

The global economic downturn hasn’t stopped Starwood from announcing new projects in eastern China, with five new hotels planned for Chengdu, Dalian, Huizhou, Jiangyin and Sanya.

The hotel group says that it aims to double its footprint in China from the existing 47 properties by 2011. It plans to open ten hotels this year, including the Westin Nanjing and the Four Points by Sheraton Gunagzhou, and has announced a futher five projects, two St Regis hotels and three Sheraton properties.

The St Regis hotels will be located in Sanya’s Yalong Bay and Chengdu. The St Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort is due for completion in 2011, and will feature 402 rooms and 22,000sqft of meeting space. Meanwhile the St Regis Chengdu will be built in the city’s central business district, and will feature “approximately 268 rooms including 55 suites”, but is not due to open until 2014.

The three new Sheraton properties are the Sheraton Jiangyin, due to open in 2011 and located in the eastern province of Jiangsu; the Sheraton Dalian Xinghai planned for 2012 and located in the northeastern Liaoning prvince; and the Sheraton Bailuhu Resort, Huizhou, again slated for 2012 and situated in the southeastern Guangdong province.
