Starwood adds Turnberry to Luxury Collection

14 Jul 2009 by Mark Caswell

Starwood Hotels and Resorts has added Turnberry Golf Resort to its Luxury Collection portfolio, with the hotel officially reopening in time for this week’s Open Championship.

Formerly operating under Starwood's Westin brand, Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort, has undergone a US$65 million renovation programme by owners Leisurecorp, focusing on its public spaces and 40 of the hotel’s 211 guest rooms.

Situated on Scotland’s Ayrshire coast, Turnberry will host golf’s Open Championship on its Ailsa Course from July 16-19, with the hotel’s interiors having been redesigned by Fox Linton Associates, collaborating closely with Historic Scotland.

“Being privileged to work on an iconic building in such a beautiful coastal setting lent inspiration to the new concept,” said Mary Fox Linton. “We wanted to pay tribute to the original design by James Miller and bring it up to date to create an ambience of contemporary luxury using a colour palate and textures that reflect the hotel’s location looking out over the Irish Sea.”

Turnberry has a total of three golf courses, the 18-hole Ailsa and Kintyre courses, as well as the nine-hole Arran Course, and the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy.
