Smartphone revealed as travellers' most indispensable companion

The smartphone is now viewed as a traveller's most indispensable companion, according to a survey by Expedia. The study was conducted online and received 9,642 responses across 19 countries.

Travellers consider their phones to the most important item they carry with them when they travel, ahead of their toothbrush, deodorant and driver’s license.

The three countries that place the highest importance on mobile devices as a travel companion are China, where 96 per cent of respondents consider their smartphone an important travel companion, Thailand on 88 per cent, and Taiwan on 86 per cent.

84 per cent of respondents want to be able to access information from anywhere while they travel, with more than half of respondents saying they would be “lost” without a mobile device while on holiday.

35 per cent of travellers polled felt they actually use their mobile devices more regularly whilst on holiday, with many feeling the need to remain connected to work. More than half of travellers, (53 per cent), check their work emails at least once a day whilst abroad.  

60 per cent of travellers globally say they would be unwilling to go on vacation without a mobile device while 63 per cent sleep with the device beside their bed while on vacation. More than 1 in 4 travellers, (28 per cent), carry a spare battery or recharger pack.
