SIA reaffirms commitment to Manchester

5 Nov 2009 by Mark Caswell

Singapore Airlines has no plans to drop its Manchester route despite cutting the frequency from five to three times per week this summer.

As reported by businesstraveller.com (see online news February 25), Manchester has been reduced to three flights per week using B777-200 aircraft with a two class product (economy and an angled lie-flat seating in business class.) On the four days that there is no direct service, passengers wanting to fly with SIA are left with the option of connecting via London Heathrow.

Huang Cheng Eng, executive vice president (marketing & regions) for Singapore Airlines, said that there were no plans to further reduce or drop the service.

“We have a continued commitment to Manchester. You cannot treat every city in the UK the same. The aircraft on a particular route must be decided by the amount of traffic and its value.

"London is a global financial city, as is New York, with all the finance and banking that goes on there, [but] you don’t have that high premium content and first class on Manchester, or the same traffic pattern or volume, so you have to tailor your aircraft configuration to the traffic demand. And if you don’t have enough traffic to make it daily, you still serve it, but less often, and that is what’s happening. “

Singapore Airlines has reduced its capacity by around 12 per cent globally, and taken some 17 aircraft out of service.
