Hong Kong-based luxury hotel chain Shangri-La is to open its first property in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo in 2014.

The group has purchased a six-acre plot of land facing the Green Face promenade, and plans to develop a complex featuring 500 rooms, “high-end retail facilities” and “deluxe apartments”.

Shangri-La says it is also planning a second Sri Lankan property in the southern coastal city of Hambantota, due for completion in 2013.

The group recently opened its first European property, an 81-room hotel in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, closer to the Trocadero (see online news November 19). The hotel is housed in the former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte - Napoleon Bonaparte's grandnephew, with the building dating back to 1896.

Other forthcoming Shangri-La properties in Europe include Vienna (2011), Moscow, Istanbul and London (all 2012). The London project will be housed within The Shard building, currently being built next to London Bridge station, which will be one of the tallest buildings in Europe when completed.
