SAS to reinstate Oslo-New York link

8 Dec 2010 by BusinessTraveller

Scandinavian Airlines is to restart flights between Oslo and New York Newark next year, with a daily service using Airbus A330 aircraft.

The carrier last served New York from Oslo several years ago, with the majority of its long-haul flights departing from Copenhagen.

But SAS says it will reinstate the Oslo-NY service from the end of March 2011, with daily flights departing Oslo at 1110 and arriving in New York at 1315. The return leg will leave Newark at 1910, landing back in Oslo at 0835 the following day.

Currently fellow Star Alliance carrier Continental Airlines is the only airline flying direct between Oslo and New York, with a daily service using B757 aircraft. United Airlines (which is in the process of merging with Continental) codeshares on this route.

Low-cost carrier Norwegian (based in Oslo) recently announced an order for two Dreamliner aircraft (see online news November 8), which it says it will use as part of its set up for future long-haul flights. New York and Bangkok are believed to be among the possible launch routes for this operation.

Late last year Scandinavian start-up carrier Feel Air also announced its intentions to launch low-cost flights from Stockholm and Oslo to New York and Bangkok in 2010 (see online news November 11, 2009), although there has since been no word from the carrier as to a launch date.

As a Star Alliance carrier SAS will be able to tap into US and Canadian connections at New York with partner airlines Air Canada, Continental Airlines and United Airlines.
