Qatar to launch direct service to Edinburgh

20 Nov 2013 by GrahamSmith

Qatar Airways will begin a five-weekly direct service between Doha and Edinburgh from May.

The carrier will deploy a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in a two-cabin configuration, with 22 seats in business class and 232 in economy, on the new route.

From May 28, Qatar will fly to Edinburgh on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Flight QR 027 will depart Doha at 0800 and arrive in Edinburgh at 1315 local time. Return service QR 028 will leave Edinburgh at 1445 and land in Doha at 2340 local time.

Edinburgh will be the Qatar's third UK destination - it currently operates five flights daily to London Heathrow and ten weekly to Manchester.

John Donnelly, chief executive of Marketing Edinburgh, said: "This is very important news, not just for Edinburgh but Scotland as a whole. It opens up a new audience to the city – one that's key for both tourism and business.

"Doha is one of the Middle East's most progressive, wealthiest cities and there’s a great deal of untapped potential that we can realise with this route. We look forward to working with Edinburgh Airport and Qatar Airways."

Qatar's Doha-Edinburgh route, when launched, is set to be the first scheduled B787 service from a Scottish airport. Charter carrier Thomson Airways flew the Dreamliner from Glasgow to Cancun and Orlando during the summer 2013 season.

On Monday, US Airways announced that it is launching a non-stop daily service between Philadephia and Edinburgh next summer (see news, November 18).
