Qantas to serve London-Melbourne route with A380
Published: 22/12/2009 - Filed under: News »
Qantas will take delivery of its sixth A380 aircraft later this week, allowing it to roster the superjumbo on to its London-Singapore-Melbourne route from January 22, 2010.
The carrier will operate two flights per week on the route with the A380, namely flights QF10 on Fridays and Saturdays (returning as QF9), increasing to a twice-weekly service from March 29.
Qantas will be the second carrier to serve Melbourne from Singapore with the A380, following SIA’s launch of a daily service with the superjumbo in September (see online new July 15).
The decision of Qantas to go head-to-head with SIA’s A380 offering on the route is a surprise, as it had originally been thought Qantas would add the A380 to its London-Hong Kong-Melbourne service (see online news September 21). This would have been the debut of the superjumbo on the London-Hong Kong route.
