New Dubai airport to open for cargo in June

Dubai’s second airport will open to cargo on June 27 and to passengers by the end of March next year, it has been announced.

Phase one of the airport, formerly known as Jebel Ali International and now named Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International, will include an A380-compatible runway, a terminal with capacity for 5,000,000 passengers and a 92-metre air traffic control tower.

It is planned that Dubai International will remain the emirate’s hub for at least the next decade but owning company Dubai Airports says the second facility is needed to accommodate an estimated growth in passenger numbers to 98 million by 2020.

Dubai World Central will be developed as “a multi-modal logistics hub”, said Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports. Its location close to Jebel Ali port and free zone means cargo will be a major part of its business.

The company says Dubai World Central will “eventually become the world’s largest airport with a capacity of 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year”, with up to four terminals and five 4.5km runways. Construction is expected to be completed by 2020.
