New “budget luxury” hotel to open at Schiphol

Schiphol is to gain another hotel attached to the terminal building, in the form of the trendy 230-room Citizen M.
Amsterdam’s airport is already due to welcome an airside Yotel property in early 2008 (see online news August 6), while Citizen M (Citizen Mobile) will be attached to arrivals Zone 4 by a covered walkway.
The hotel will feature 14sqm rooms (cosy, although still 4sqm larger than the Yotel premium cabins at Gatwick), all with wall-to-wall windows, superking-size beds, rain showers, designer furniture, LCD TV screens with free movies, global plug sockets and complimentary wifi internet access. There will also be Philips “mood pads” to control the TV, wake-up calls, temperature, electronic blinds and mood lighting.
The five-floor building will also feature a 24-hour canteen and “living spaces” for guests to work or relax in. When they leave, guests will be able to keep their keycard, which doubles as a luggage tag and retains the user’s details and preferences for their next visit.
Room prices at Citizen M will start at €69 (£48), a rate the hotel says it has been able to achieve due to its “Industrial Flexible Demountable” construction process – rooms are pre-made off-site, resulting in a “comparable quality to that of a luxury yacht or private jet”. It also says it can deliver cost savings of up to 50 per cent, as the housekeeping status of individual rooms is automatically communicated to a central office via “remote monitoring checks”, meaning cleaning personnel can work more efficiently.
The Citizen M Amsterdam Airport is due to open early 2008, with a second property near the city centre slated for later in the year. The first 100 rooms at Citizen M will be given away for free when the reservations site launches. (Visit citizenm.com for more information.)
