Munich Airport has today opened its new extension satellite to Terminal 2.
The new satellite increases Terminal 2’s capacity by 11 million from 25 million to a total of 36 million, and it is envisaged that in the first year of operation the new terminal will welcome nine million passengers.
Reached by a four-carriage underground shuttle train from the midfield Terminal 2, the new satellite welcomes Schengen (two carriages), non-Schengen (one carriage) and non-European passengers (one carriage) all of whom use the shuttle via an ingenious passenger separation system.
It means that non-Schengen passengers who currently use Level 5 of Terminal 2 (H Gates) descend to the train and then are processed via the L Gates in the satellite, while Schengen passengers move from Level 4 (the G Gates) to the Level K in the satellite.
Terminal 2 is dedicated to Star Alliance carriers, and the new satellite has five lounges in its Schengen and non-Schengen areas with a total of more than 4,000 sqm added to the existing seven lounges in Terminal 2.
Currently, Lufthansa offers a First Class Lounge, three Senator and two business lounges as well as a Senator Café with a total of over 4,600 sqm in Terminal 2.
In total 18 of Star Alliance’s 28 airlines serve Munich providing 355 daily flights to 147 destinations in 53 countries.
In addition to Lufthansa these are Aegean Airlines, Adria Airways, Air Canada, Air China, Austrian Airlines, ANA, Croatia Airlines, Egyptair, Lot Polish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Swiss, TAP, Thai, Turkish Airlines and United.
The opening of the new satellite building sees the number of lounges accessible to Star Alliance Gold card holders, rise to nine; five in Terminal 2 and a further four in the new satellite.
The new facility also has 15 retail areas, seven restaurants and cafes and three duty free zones.
