Mexicana to join Oneworld
Published: 10/04/2008 - Filed under: News »
Airline alliance Oneworld has announced that Mexicana will become its 11th full member next year, with subsidiary Click Mexicana also joining as an affiliate member.
The Mexican carrier will be supported by Oneworld founding member Iberia (in co-operation with American Airlines) during the joining process, which is expected to take 12 to 18 months.
The move will further strengthen Oneworld’s presence in the Latin American region, with LAN (formerly known as Lan Chile) already a full member, and its sister airlines LAN Argentina, LAN Ecuador and LAN Peru forming part of the affiliate membership.
Mexicana was formerly a member of Star Alliance up until 2004, while the carrier’s main rival Aeromexico is a member of the Skyteam alliance. The announcement follows Star Alliance’s inauguration of Turkish Airlines into its fold (see online news April 3, 2008), with Egyptair due to follow later this year.
Mexicana and Click Mexicana serve a total of 63 destinations in 11 countries, including Montreal, Toronto, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Buenos Aires and Panama City.
