Malaysia Airlines will officially become a Oneworld member on February 1 next year, around 20 months after first announcing plans to join the alliance.
Oneworld said that the carrier’s implementation programme “is on track for completion in the coming week”, but that the inauguration was being held until early next year “to avoid the end-of-year holiday season and for other administrative reasons”.
The alliance said that MAS has received clearance to join Oneworld following a review of its readiness by sponsor Qantas and the Oneworld team.
MAS first announced plans to join Oneworld in June last year (see online news June 6, 2011), and in May said it was “on schedule” to join the alliance by the end of the year, having streamlined its carry-on baggage policies (see online news May 15).
