Lufthansa has confirmed New York JFK as its fourth A380 destination when a new service launches early next year.
Mention of the new route was spotted on Lufthansa’s US Twitter page which told followers of a twice-weekly service on Mondays and Fridays commencing February 15.
It will be the first time that Lufthansa has served a transatlantic route with the superjumbo. Lufthansa could not confirm plans to increase the frequency to daily, although this would seem likely should the route prove a success.
An official announcement with further details is expected next week.
The news will put pressure on British Airways - which has yet to receive the first of 12 A380s - to roster the superjumbo on its Heathrow-JFK service.
Lufthansa launched its A380 aircraft in May (see online news May 19), and currently flies the superjumbo to Tokyo, Beijing and Johannesburg. In October Lufthansa flew two special one-off flights to Mallorca using the A380 (see online news September 23).
